HELF was founded in 2005 to maintain, preserve and protect the historic building and grounds. Since that time, HELF has raised funds for ongoing maintenance and preservation projects such as repointing exterior brickwork, repairing plaster and paint in the main lodge room, recovering theater seats, repair of deteriorated floors, and more.
Our building, located in downtown Hillsborough and is one of the earliest, most historic masonic lodge buildings in North Carolina. According to the National Register of Historic Places, it was likely designed by state architect William Nichols and built by local craftsmen Samuel Hancock and John Berry. For nearly 200 years, the building has been the home of Eagle Lodge #19, making it one of the oldest continuously used masonic buildings in the United States.
